Who is David DeCan, Owner/Breeder Big Sky Retrievers

David had been a bird dog guy for 50 years. He grew up in eastern Oregon, and did his undergraduate in business administration at the University of Washington. Currently David is the Owner/Broker of Hearth & Home Realty and Property Management in Missoula, MT. David has been married to Noelle for 35 years. They have four grown children and two daughters-in-law. Until recently, Noelle was a high school history teacher at Valley Christian in Missoula. Their oldest son Evan is married to Courtney. Both Evan and Courtney are doctors working in the Los Angeles area. Noelle and David's second son, Christian is married to Sarah, a nurse, and is a pastor in the South Seattle area. They share two very special grandchildren with us. Kate works north of Seattle as a Speech therapist and was married last summer to David, a Boeing guy. Anna is our youngest and just finished her first year of VetMed in Bozeman, before moving to Pullman to complete her veterinary training.
David's love of bird dogs brought him to his newest venture, Big Sky Retrievers. David was a Brittany guy until the last few years when his efforts were turned to breeding and training Labrador and Golden Retrievers. All of David's original breeding stock were sired by National or National Amateur Champions. DeCan's Back In Black, (Ace) was sired by NFC FC AFC Maxx's Surprise. DeCan's No More Mr. Nice Guy (Cooper) was sired by NAFC FC AFC Texas Troubadour. DeCan's Notorious Nyx (Nyx) was sired by NFC AFC FC Hunter Runs Booboo. DeCan's Flirt'n With Disaster (Molly) was sired by NAFC FC AFC Pack Your Grip. From the original breeding with Ace and Nye we worked with two additional females, DeCan's Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club and DeCan's Baby Got Her Blue Jeans On. We added some chocolates and more yellows as demand for these great dogs grew. We also added one pair of field bred golden retrievers. Life changes in 2022 led us to place many of our dogs in home settings, in many cases with existing Big Sky families. Our move to a small ranch means our home dogs mingle with cattle, jump in the ditch and lay on the porch. It's a dog's life around here, which is exactly what we hope for for all our dogs.

Big Sky Labrador Retrievers
David with his two foundation sires:
DeCan's Back In Black, aka Mr. Ace & DeCan's No More Mr. Nice Guy, aka Mr. Cooper
Presently David is breeding Field and Family Labrador Retrievers and has puppies and started dogs available at various times during the year. He is a bird dog trainer and hopes to do more of this when he retires down the road a bit.
Big Sky Labrador Retrievers was started to provide National Champion type Labrador Retrievers to families and hunters at a reasonable price.
Our dogs, while being great in the field, are just as great in the home as family dogs. We don't believe that a Big Sky Lab is underutilized by being just a family dog. On the contrary, we feel that being a family dog is our Lab's highest calling. The Labrador Retriever is the long time standing number one dog in America for a reason--it's because no other breed makes a better family dog. Period. We seek these kind of homes, both hunter and non-hunter homes for our puppies and started dogs.
David is available to take calls at 406-531-6939. We do not have an exhaustive application process, but he does like to "meet" prospective puppy owners and he prefers telephone to text or email. In case that is too up front, he may be reached at bigskyretrievers@gmail.com.
