Puppy Pick-Up Day
Big Sky puppies are ready to go to their new homes at 7 to 8 weeks. By the time a Big Sky puppy reaches 7 weeks he will have had his dew claws removed and had his first 5-way vaccination. The puppy will have been wormed multiple times. The puppy will be on a diet of Purina Pro Plan Focus Puppy Chicken and Rice, 28% protein and 18% fat. This is the regular puppy NOT large breed.
Puppy pick-up day is usually held on the Saturday following the puppies 7th week. According to when your deposit was received, is the order of puppy pick. A determination as to the desired gender of the puppy will have been made upon making the waitlist fee through PayPal. According to when your deposit was received a 30 minute appointment time will be given to the new puppy owner. New owners usually start arriving at around 10 am. New puppy owners are given around 15 minutes to pick out the their new puppy from the litter. Upon selecting your Big Sky Lab pup we will go inside and complete AKC and ownership paper work. New puppy owners will be given a copy of our puppy purchase agreement and guarantee which can be found on this site, two days worth of puppy food, and AKC paperwork. Pictures are taken and the new puppy is sent on its way.
You will need to bring a smaller size collar. These can be picked up at Walmart. The clip on kind works well at this early life stage. Also bring a Flexi Leash. These leashes expand for 20 feet and retract. Perfect to allow puppy some movement but keeping puppy contained. A medium size kennel box is recommended as well. Fill the box with a couple of old towels. Towels are best as they can be washed. Don't use wood chips. Messy and puppy can ingest them. Bring a stainless steel water dish and a large bottle of water. We also suggest a roll or two of paper towels and a bottle of 409 Spray Cleaner.
Please be reminded the puppies have never been away from our home. New puppies can get car sick. We feed puppies that are going to be traveling even short distances very lightly in the morning. If your trip is short them you can withhold food until you are home. If you are traveling long distances you should feed the puppy small amounts on the way home. You will know fairly quickly if your puppy is going to get car sick. Not all puppies get car sick--maybe 1 in 6. Your puppy will be hungry when you get home or to your motel the evening of Puppy Pick Up day. That OK, Feed him a full portion which will be written on the Zip Lock bag of food. Under no circumstances should you change food. All guarantees for your Big Sky Puppy are null and void if you change food. Be prepared to go to PetSmart of PetCo in Missioula to pick up a 34 pound bag of Purnina Pro Plan Focus Puppy, Chicken and Rice, 28% Protein and 18% fat. If you are in a rest stop take the puppy to a place away from people. Do not let your puppy sniff or lick other dogs feces. One sniff or lick of a poop from a dog with Parvo or Distemper and your puppy could contract one of these life threatening diseases. Also do not take your puppy out and about with other dogs until the third vaccination. Vaccinations come at two week intervals. See your veterinarian as soon as possible upon arriving at your home. Puppy stays home with family and family animals until the third vaccination. We even suggest limited visitors to the home. Visitors can carry in infected feces on their shoes. If your puppy contracts Parvo or Disptemper after leaving our home the guarantee is null and void. We work with a local pet transporter who might be able to bring your puppy to you. Let us know if you would like to explore this option.
We do not ship puppies by air cargo unaccompanied. It is too dangerous. Over the years we have seen some very close calls on puppies being shipped unaccompanied.
With that said, we would much prefer you come to our home for Puppy Pick-Up Day. It's a fun day with lots of happy people getting their new Big Sky puppy. Kids are running about, and it is a time for us to get to know one another a bit. It's worth the trip and we will take a family picture with your new Big Sky pup. We are now located in between Missoula and Kalispell, both of which offer hotels, or you can stay at one of Hot Springs' unique soak places.
